We had the opportunity this past weekend to attend the Wild West Steampunk Con 2025, also known as WWSC13. We first heard of this convention almost 10 years ago when we saw Madame Askew hosting a teapot racing panel at Tucson Comic-Con. From that moment, we knew we had to go.
Life, as it often does, got in the way, and it took us until this year to finally attend. However, when the opportunity arose, we were incredibly honored to be given the privilege of covering the event. In the years between, we had attended countless conventions and festivals, but nothing quite compared to the unique charm and energy of Wild West Steampunk Con.
A Community Like No Other
One of the first things that struck me upon arrival was the overwhelming sense of community. This convention had an atmosphere that felt less like a large-scale event and more like a family reunion. It was clear that many attendees had been coming for years, building lasting friendships and connections through their shared love of steampunk culture.
Even as first-time attendees, we never felt like outsiders. The people we met—whether seasoned veterans of the convention or newcomers like ourselves—were warm, welcoming, and eager to share their enthusiasm. There was an authenticity in the air, a feeling that everyone present was allowed to be their truest selves. The inclusivity, creativity, and sheer joy radiating from the crowd made it an unforgettable experience.
The Unmistakable Energy of Wild West Steampunk Con
Though we, unfortunately, only had a few hours to explore the convention due to scheduling conflicts, every moment spent there was truly captivating. From the second we stepped onto the event grounds, we were immersed in a world of intricate costumes, carefully designed props, and awe-inspiring craftsmanship.
Steampunk fashion is known for its attention to detail, and WWSC13 was no exception. The variety of outfits on display ranged from classic Victorian-inspired attire adorned with brass and gears to elaborate, futuristic interpretations of the aesthetic. Corsets, top hats, goggles, mechanical arms, and intricately designed accessories were everywhere, each telling a story of creativity and dedication.
Beyond the fashion, the event itself was an explosion of artistry. The creativity extended into every aspect of the con—from the way vendors decorated their booths to the interactive panels and performances. Each area of the event felt like stepping into another layer of the steampunk world, with every participant adding to the living, breathing experience.
A Space for Everyone
While conventions often bring together large groups of like-minded individuals, there was something uniquely intimate about WWSC13. Perhaps it was the fact that steampunk culture naturally fosters craftsmanship and storytelling, or maybe it was the long-running history of the event that cultivated such a tight-knit environment. Regardless of the reason, there was a deep sense of belonging among attendees.
Many conventions can feel overwhelming, filled with long lines, packed schedules, and impersonal crowds. This event, however, felt different. It wasn’t just about seeing cool costumes or finding rare merchandise—it was about making connections, learning from others, and being part of something bigger. People didn’t just walk past each other; they stopped, talked, shared stories, and celebrated their mutual love for this imaginative genre.
Craftsmanship and Creativity on Display
As we made our way through the event, we couldn’t help but be captivated by the sheer artistry on display. The vendors brought an impressive array of handcrafted goods, from beautifully designed leather accessories to intricate clockwork jewelry and custom corsetry. It was clear that these weren’t just merchants looking to make a sale—they were passionate artists eager to share their work with the community. Conversations at the booths often turned into in-depth discussions about the creative process, material choices, and the stories behind each piece. Whether you were looking for a custom prop, a one-of-a-kind fashion statement, or just wanted to admire the incredible skill on display, there was something for everyone.
Beyond the vendor hall, panels and workshops offered hands-on experiences and deep dives into the art of steampunk. [Insert specific panel experiences here]. Whether you were learning about metalworking, prop-building, or the history of Victorian-era fashion, there was always something new to discover.
A Short but Unforgettable Experience
Though our time at WWSC13 was brief, it left a lasting impression. The incredible outfits, the stunning craftsmanship, and the creative ingenuity of the attendees were enough to make it a highlight of the year. However, what truly set it apart was the sense of warmth and belonging that filled every corner of the event.
In a world where conventions can sometimes feel impersonal or overwhelming, Wild West Steampunk Con stood out as a gathering built on passion, acceptance, and community. It wasn’t just a place to see and be seen—it was a space where people could truly be themselves. That, above all else, is what made this experience so special.
Looking to the Future
As we reflect on our time at WWSC13, one thing is clear: we won’t be waiting another 10 years to return. This convention has proven to be a celebration of everything we love about steampunk—the artistry, the innovation, and most importantly, the people who bring it to life.
